Reports
background
For the second time after 1974 the French Grand Prix took place in Dijon. The route had meanwhile been extended by about 500 meters by adding the section known as "Parabolique" .
The originally planned premiere of the Renault team with turbo engine at the home race had to be postponed to the Grand Prix of Great Britain at short notice , to which some French spectators reacted with disappointment. Instead, Surtees regular driver Larry Perkins was surprisingly replaced by up-and-coming French young driver Patrick Tambay during training.
training
Mario Andretti once again demonstrated the competitiveness of the Lotus 78 by reaching pole position , followed by James Hunt , who, after initial problems , seemed to be getting along better and better with the now further developed McLaren M26 . Gunnar Nilsson and John Watson qualified for the second row .
The two leaders in the world championship, Jody Scheckter and Niki Lauda , found themselves in eighth and ninth place after training.
Since the race track was one of the shortest courses of the season despite the expansion last year, the maximum number of starters for the race was limited to 22 vehicles. The slowest eight of the 30 pilots who had arrived could not qualify as a result.
run
James Hunt took the lead from second on the grid, ahead of John Watson, Jacques Laffite and the poorly started Mario Andretti. In the fifth lap, Watson took the lead. Up to the 17th lap nothing changed in this order at the top. Then Andretti overtook second-placed Hunt and from then on caught up slightly on Watson, whose lead of five seconds only slowly decreased.
Andretti only passed Watson on the last lap when he was struggling with a lack of fuel. Although he was able to defend second place against Hunt, the disappointment over the narrowly missed win outweighed the situation. Gunnar Nilsson finished fourth in front of the two Ferrari drivers Niki Lauda and Carlos Reutemann .
Registration list
1 Patrick Tambay took over the Surtees TS19 with starting number 18 from Larry Perkins in third practice on Saturday.
