The 1977 US Grand Prix took place in Long Beach on April 3 and was the fourth race of the 1977 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
Two weeks after Tom Pryce's fatal accident at the South African Grand Prix , the non-World Championship Race of Champions took place at Brands Hatch , which James Hunt finished victoriously. That same weekend, Carlos Pace was killed in a plane crash near his hometown of São Paulo . Thus, Formula 1 lost two regular drivers within a short period of time.
Even before the next World Championship round, which took place two weeks later in Long Beach, both regular places were permanently reassigned. Pryce was replaced by Alan Jones at Shadow . Brabham team boss Bernie Ecclestone hired Hans-Joachim Stuck to succeed Pace. The gap that Stuck left with March was then briefly filled with Brian Henton .
The German ATS Racing Team , which had acquired a Penske PC4 , made its Formula 1 debut this weekend. Since the originally planned Hans-Joachim Stuck had canceled due to the more promising offer from Ecclestone, Jean-Pierre Jarier was hired as a driver at short notice .
training
Ferrari driver Niki Lauda secured his first pole position of the year just ahead of Mario Andretti in the constantly improved Lotus 78 . Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemann followed in the second row . Jacques Laffite and John Watson qualified for the third row ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt.
run
Scheckter got the best start, taking the lead from Lauda and Andretti. Several vehicles collided in the tight first corner. Among other things, Hunt's car collided with Watson's car and briefly lost contact with the ground when the wheels of both vehicles touched. However, Vittorio Brambilla was the only driver who had to give up the race immediately due to excessive damage.
Due to the collisions that all happened behind Andretti, the top three winners were able to gain an advantage over the rest of the field during the first lap. Laffite followed them well ahead of Watson, Fittipaldi, Jones and Patrick Depailler . Reutemann, Hunt and Jochen Mass went to their boxes at the end of the first lap to have repairs carried out.
There were no changes in position in the leading group until shortly before the end of the race. It was not until the 77th lap that Scheckter fell back to third behind Andretti and Lauda due to tire problems. Andretti thus achieved a home win.
Since Laffite was unable to finish two laps due to a technical defect, fourth place went to Depailler. Fittipaldi secured two points in fifth and Jarier made a successful debut for the ATS team in sixth.
