The Grand Prix of the USA West (also Grand Prix of Long Beach ) was a Formula 1 race which was held eight times between 1976 and 1983. The venue was the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit in Long Beach , California .
history
The name USA West was chosen because Formula 1 wanted to host two races on US soil. In 1976 the new street circuit in Long Beach, California, was chosen as the venue. Formula 5000 was a guest here a year earlier . An IndyCar race has been held annually since 1984 under the name Grand Prix of Long Beach .
In 1980 there was a momentous accident on the 51st lap of the race, which ended the career and almost the life of Clay Regazzoni , when he collided with a four-ton concrete block at around 280 km / h . Regazzoni survived the impact seriously injured, but has been paraplegic since that accident .
