The Vietnam Grand Prix is scheduled to take place for the first time in 2020 . The race is scheduled to take place on the Hanoi Street Circuit in Hanoi , the capital of Vietnam .

history

The plans for a Formula 1 race in Vietnam were first examined by the former managing director of the Formula One Group , the British Bernie Ecclestone , who finally gave up the idea as there have already been five races in Asia (since then the Grand Prix of Malaysia disappeared from the calendar). Ecclestone also admitted that the failure of the Korean Grand Prix (2010-2013) and India (2011-2013) made him doubt a race in Vietnam.

The idea was revived after Liberty Media acquired the commercial rights to Formula 1 from CVC Capital Partners in January 2017 . The Vietnam Grand Prix was announced in November 2018 and is the first new Grand Prix under Liberty Media's ownership. The first race, the 2020 Vietnam Grand Prix , was due to take place on April 5, 2020 as part of a multi-year contract, but has been postponed to an as yet unknown date due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
