Bernard Charles "Bernie" Ecclestone (* 28. October 1930 in Ipswich , Suffolk , England ) is a British motor racing - functionary , entrepreneurs and until 2017 CEO of Formula 1 -Holding SLEC ( Formula One Group ).

Life

Bernie Ecclestone was born into a working class family on October 28, 1930 in Ipswich. Raised in Bexleyheath in the London borough of Bexley , he finished school at the age of 16 and found a job with the local public utility.

In his early years, Ecclestone raced cars himself until 1958. He was registered for participation in two Formula 1 races of the 1958 World Automobile Championship : the Monaco Grand Prix and the Great Britain Grand Prix . However, he was unable to qualify for the race both times.

Ecclestone was also the manager and owner of the Connaught team, and later the Brabham team. In between, he was Jochen Rindt's manager for some time . From the beginning of the 1970s, Ecclestone invested his manpower in the professionalization of Formula 1 and since then has been marketing its racing events to television stations and advertising companies worldwide. He was Managing Director of the Formula One Group until January 23, 2017 .

On September 1, 2007, Ecclestone and then Renault team boss Flavio Briatore bought the London football club Queens Park Rangers . The purchase price was 1.5 million  euros , and liabilities of 19.5 million euros were repaid.

Ecclestone is married for the third time. He and his first wife Ivy have their eldest daughter, Deborah (* 1955). Ecclestone's first grandson comes from Deborah, who meanwhile has children himself, making Ecclestone his great-grandfather. After that he was married for almost 25 years to Slavica Ecclestone (née Radić), 28 years his junior , a former Armani model from Rijeka in Croatia . Together they have two daughters, Tamara (* 1984) and Petra (* 1988). The marriage was divorced on March 11, 2009. In August 2012, Ecclestone announced that he had married the Brazilian Fabiana Flosi . On July 1, 2020, at the age of 89, their son Ace was born - Ecclestone's fourth child.

Controversy

  • In May 2007, Ecclestone caused a scandal when he threatened not to realize the already negotiated new street circuit of Valencia if the conservative Partido Popular did not win the upcoming regional election; this was interpreted as blackmail and political interference.
  • On July 4, 2009, the British Times published an interview with Ecclestone in which he compared today's politicians with Adolf Hitler ( able to get things done ) and expressed his political views. Today's politicians are too scared of elections and let Britain go under. He was of the opinion that Hitler was actually not a true dictator. In his opinion, the then FIA President Max Mosley would make a good Prime Minister for Great Britain. He was reprimanded and criticized by political and Jewish groups for his statements. The Central Council of Jews in Germany called on the Formula 1 teams to boycott Ecclestone . Ecclestone later apologized for what he said.
  • During the corruption trial against Gerhard Gribkowsky (former board member of BayernLB ), the Chief Public Prosecutor accused Bernie Ecclestone. He accused him of paying the former bank director, who was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in June 2012, a $ 44 million bribe in order to obtain a sale of BayernLB's shares in the Formula 1 holding company. Ecclestone denied this.
  • In mid-July 2013, the public prosecutor brought charges against Ecclestone at the Munich Regional Court I for bribery and incitement to breach of trust in a particularly serious case. The case has been negotiated since the end of April 2014. Originally, 26 trial days were scheduled. The process was on August 5, 2014 by § 153a Code of Criminal Procedure (about 75 million euros) in return for cash circulation in the amount of 100 million US dollars set . This agreement was received critically in the German media.
  • In July 2020, Ecclestone said in an interview about the Black Lives Matter protests after the death of George Floyd and the efforts of world champion Lewis Hamilton for an inclusive future in Formula 1 with the commission for the promotion of dark skinned people: “In many Blacks are more racist than whites. ”Hamilton responded with harsh criticism to Ecclestone's statements that they were“ ignorant and uneducated ”; It was now completely clear to him why Formula 1 under Ecclestone had never done anything against racism .
