Beate Lakotta

Beate Lakotta (* 1965 in Kassel ) is a German journalist and book author.

Life

Beate Lakotta is the daughter of the ceramicist Peter Lakotta . Lakotta studied German and political science at the University of Heidelberg . After a traineeship in television, she initially worked as a freelance journalist. In 2000, Lakotta started working for the science department of Der Spiegel magazine . There she dealt with topics from medicine , medical ethics, neurosciences and psychology . Since 2011 she has been a justice and crime reporter for the news magazine.

Awards

In 2000 she won the Schizophrenia Reintegration Award given by Lilly Deutschland GmbH in the journalism category for her article Orders from the Cat.

Lakotta and Schels were awarded the Hansel Mieth Prize , the German Social Prize and the German Photo Book Prize 2004 for the book Another life before death, which Lakotta published in collaboration with her partner, the photographer Walter Schels .

In 2007 the Association of German Medical Journalists (VDMJ) and Bayer HealthCare AG awarded her the European Journalism Prize in the Print category for Alexander's farewell article published in Spiegel magazine . In 2010, the magazine Emma Lakotta awarded for her report, Der Ludwig laughs, on the subject of late abortion , which was published in Spiegel , with 3rd place in the Emma Journalist Prize . In 2011, Lakotta received the German Reporter Award for the Spiegel interview A Life Like in Purgatory with Richard Taylor, a psychology professor who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease . The report I just wanted to survive on Somali pirates brought to justice in Germany was nominated in 2012 for the Henri Nannen Prize in the category of best reportage.

criticism

In December 2012, Lakotta defended the proceedings of the Bavarian judiciary in the Gustl Mollath case in several articles and was criticized for this by the blogging lawyers Oliver García, Thomas Stadler and Gabriele Wolff . Expert Hans Simmerl contradicted Lakotta's account that he had considered Mollath to be "clearly disturbed".
