The Audi 19/100 hp Type R "Imperator" is a superclass - cars of the Audi Werke AG of Zwickau . The first Audi with eight-cylinder engine was the successor of the very expensive six-cylinder model Audi 18/70 hp Type M . From 1927 to 1929, 145 Type R "Imperator" were delivered in Zwickau . The successor was the eight-cylinder type SS "Zwickau" .

The Audi Type R has a side-controlled in - line engine with a displacement of 4.9 liters installed at the front , which drives the rear wheels via a three-speed gearbox with a gearshift lever in the middle of the car. It develops 100 hp (74 kW) at 3300 rpm -1 . The Imperator engine was designed much simpler than that of the predecessor model Type M with an overhead camshaft and vertical shaft . Like its predecessor, the Audi 19/100 PS has leaf-sprung rigid axles at the front and rear and drum brakes on all wheels, which are operated mechanically (cable) instead of hydraulically. Although the "Imperator" offered 30 hp more engine power and with a price of 16,000  Reichsmarks eventually almost 30 percent less than the 22,300 RM expensive predecessor, the Type R found few buyers, so the Zschopauer Motorenwerke JS Rasmussen ( DKW ), the Audiwerke AG had to save from imminent bankruptcy through takeover .
