The Armani is an association founded in 1975, the global Italian fashion company based in Milan . The family business is owned by its founder Giorgio Armani .
history
1970s
On July 24th 1975 the fashion brand Giorgio Armani SpA was founded by Giorgio Armani and his partner Sergio Galeotti in Milan. The company operated as a privately run stock corporation, in which Armani was responsible for the creative and Galeotti for the business, and initially offered high-priced men's clothing and finally women's fashion. Armani's first collection under the name Giorgio Armani Borgonuovo 21 (based on the address of his headquarters in Via Borgonuovo 21 in Milan) was presented in 1975 for the spring / summer 1976 collection. His simple, light women's jackets , based on men's clothing, were a great success. In the following years, additional collections for underwear , swimwear and accessories were designed. In 1978 Armani signed a license agreement with the textile manufacturers GFT (Gruppo Finanziario Tessile) and Vestimenta each for the production of Armani fashion, including for the ready-to-wear line Armani Le Collezioni (later: Armani Collezioni ). In 1979 the North American market was opened up.
1980s
In 1980 Armani designed uniforms for the Italian Air Force . In 1981 the second line Emporio Armani was launched and the first Emporio Armani boutique was opened in Milan. The Armani Junior and Armani Jeans lines were created. Giorgio Armani appeared in 1982 as the first fashion designer after Christian Dior on the cover of Time Magazine . The first Armani perfume was also launched in 1982 . Armani achieved an international breakthrough in the early 1980s with outfitting various Hollywood greats. Richard Gere's clothing in Armani fashion in the film A Man for Certain Hours (original title: American Gigolo ), for which John Travolta was actually intended, attracted particular attention as early as 1980 . Subsequently, Armani became known for its sleek, elegant upper-class men's business fashion in gently draped fabrics and muted colors. In addition, in 1987 Armani was responsible for the dressing room for the leading actors in the film The Untouchables, starring Kevin Costner and Sean Connery . In 1987, the Japanese market was opened up through a license agreement with a local textile manufacturer (Itochu) and the Seibu department store chain. A license agreement for the manufacture of Armani sunglasses was concluded with the Italian eyewear manufacturer Luxottica in 1988. Over the following ten years, Armani SpA bought up its textile manufacturers (Intai Spa, Antinea Srl, Simint Spa and others) in order to have complete control over the Armani fashion production process.
1990s
Armani's women's fashion also bears witness to the occasionally cool and androgynous elegance in mostly subtle, neutral-colored fabrics. He is considered to be the inventor of the color “greige” (mixture of gray and beige). He is credited with reinventing blazers made of flowing fabrics, from T-shirts to suits and chic business outfits such as trouser suits for women. Admirers praise the Armani style as timeless, classic and elegant, while critics criticize the sometimes boring monotony. He stands in contrast to his late compatriot Gianni Versace and his colorful and provocative fashion. In 1991 the lower-priced clothing line A | X Armani Exchange, originally intended only for the US market, was launched for a young target group, which was expanded to other markets from the mid-2000s. At the same time paid the Armani Alitalia - Flight personnel from having uniforms. In 1994 Armani sold the license for the brand A | X Armani Exchange to the retailer Ong Beng Seng from Singapore , but from 2005 it held a 25% stake again and from 2008 a 50% stake. Since 2014, A | X Armani Exchange has been 100% owned by Giorgio Armani Spa again. In 1995 the Armani Group's annual sales were nearly $ 900 million. In 1996 Eric Clapton , who was dressed by Armani from the early 1990s and had previously been furnished by Versace , opened a new Emporio Armani store in New York with a concert together with Sheryl Crow .
