Sheryl Crow (2005)

Sheryl Suzanne Crow (born February 11, 1962 in Kennett , Missouri ) is an American rock singer , guitarist , bassist , pianist , songwriter and multiple Grammy award winner.

Music career

At a concert in 2018

Crow's parents, Bernice and Wendell Crow, played the piano and trumpet in a jazz band. In this musical environment, it was natural for Sheryl Crow to study music at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Afterwards she worked as a music teacher with disabled children.

The keyboard, which she used in the morning at school, did its job in the evening in various amateur bands, where Sheryl Crow also gained her first experience as a singer. There she overheard an employee of an advertising agency who spontaneously offered her to sing some radio commercials. Crow accepted the offer and a little later had earned more in a few hours than in a month as a teacher. She moved to Los Angeles and tried to gain a foothold in show business, but initially to no avail.

Her career began in 1987 when Michael Jackson hired her as a backing singer for his first world tour. Further engagements as a background singer (including with Don Henley of the Eagles or the 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration - anniversary concert for Bob Dylan ) followed. A little later, A&M Records signed her and also produced an album with Crow, which was withdrawn at the last second and has remained unreleased to this day.

Via the music producer Bill Bottrell, who was asked to take care of the Sheryl Crow song material together with Kevin Gilbert , her boyfriend at the time, she came to a loose association of musicians, which was called "Tuesday Music Club". This resulted in her debut album Tuesday Night Music Club , which was released in August 1993. However, it only became a worldwide success when the hit single All I Wanna Do was released in the late summer of 1994 .

The downside of this success was the falling out with Bill Bottrell and the other musicians on the album, as Sheryl Crow was marketed to the public as the sole responsible and creative force of the album, and other people's ideas were passed off as their own. She also split up with Kevin Gilbert, who was the real creative force behind the TMC. In particular, the fact that she gave the song Leaving Las Vegas to David Lettermann as autobiographical, although she was neither involved in the creation of the text nor in the music, deepened the rift even more. Kevin Gilbert, who never really got over the breakup, died in 1996 of autoerotic asphyxiation .

In the spring of 1994, Crow toured the USA as a support act for Crowded House , which led to her friendship with band leader Neil Finn , which has continued to this day ( Everyday Is a Winding Road is dedicated to the drummer Paul Hester , who died in 2005 ). In 1995 Sheryl Crow received several Grammys , including Best Newcomer.

In the following years Crow released more albums and toured regularly around the world. In doing so she increasingly produced her music herself and proved to be extremely talented and musically versatile. Numerous guest appearances in concerts and on CDs by other musicians testify to their high professional standard. Since the mid-1990s she has been a regular guest at concerts by the Rolling Stones , which she jokingly referred to as “our little sister” in interviews. In 1999 Crow worked with Prince and is featured on his two albums Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic and Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic as lead singer and with the harmonica in the song Baby Knows .

In 2005, Crow performed at the Live 8 concert at the Palace of Versailles in Paris . In early 2006, she had to undergo breast cancer surgery. Therefore, her North American tour planned for March and April was postponed. After the operation and subsequent radiation therapy, she resumed her career. In 2006 she sang the song Real Gone for the Disney / Pixar animated film Cars . She also sang, wrote and played the theme song Try Not to Remember for the anti-war film Home of the Brave .

On February 5, 2008, their album Detours was released in the USA. In Europe and thus also in Germany, the album was released on February 22, 2008.

On October 11, 2008, her Christmas album Home for Christmas was available exclusively in Hallmark stores in the United States . A little later the album was released in Germany with a slightly different title sequence and a different cover.

On July 20, 2010, the album 100 Miles from Memphis was released , which is characterized by classic soul. The track Summer Day was released as a single in advance. In one song she is accompanied by Keith Richards on guitar, in another song Justin Timberlake sings in the background. The album contains a few cover versions , including a piece by Citizen Cope , which he accompanies.

Private

Crow was in a relationship with cyclist Lance Armstrong from October 2003 to January 2006 . They announced the engagement in September 2005, but in early February 2006 the couple made a public statement about the separation. Sheryl Crow previously had relationships with Eric Clapton and Owen Wilson , whom she met while filming The Minus Man . The couple separated in 2001. In May 2007, Crow adopted a young boy.

In early June 2012, it was announced that Crow had a brain tumor . Crow held the tumor, which doctors diagnosed as benign , responsible for memory lapses that occurred .

Crow lives in Nashville , Tennessee .

style

Her early work is characterized by a focus on the slide guitar , later her songs became more modern, more "electronic" and fall more into the pop music category . Among her most successful songs include All I Wanna Do , If It Makes You Happy , Everyday Is a Winding Road , My Favorite Mistake and Soak Up the Sun . In 2004 she landed a worldwide hit with the cover version of the Cat Stevens song The First Cut Is the Deepest , in particular she became the first and so far only western artist in Bahrain to achieve a number 1 hit. She also made Tomorrow Never Dies , the theme song of the 1997 James Bond film of the same name (German title Der Morgen dies nie ).

Instruments

Although Crow is a singer in the first place, it also plays other instruments, preferably Western guitars from Gibson , mainly Dreadnought models. In her honor, the company brought out the Sheryl Crow signature guitar.

Awards

1995 Crow won three Grammy Awards in the categories Best New Artist (best new artist), Record of the Year (Single of the Year; All I Wanna Do) and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance - Pop) excellent. She received two more Grammys for her albums Sheryl Crow (1997) and The Globe Sessions (1999); each in the Best Rock Album category .
