Home of the Brave (English for "home of the brave") is an American war film directed by Irwin Winkler from 2006 .

action

The film tells the story of the US soldiers who were deployed in the third Gulf War in 2003 . Shortly before they return home, they are sent to a place near Baghdad where they are supposed to bring medical supplies. The unit is ambushed, shot at and fought with a remote-controlled bomb, and suffers heavy casualties.

The survivors return home, where they are sometimes confronted with their injuries and especially with their psychological trauma. The attempt to reintegrate into civil life is represented by the fate of four people.

The doctor Dr. Will Marsh is traumatized during the war when he has to treat several seriously wounded people, some of whom have had their fingers, arms or legs torn off. He can't forgive himself that he couldn't save everyone. And the images of these wounded never let him go back home. He cannot sleep at night and starts drinking. With his son, who rebels against the war and his father, he gets into arguments again and again. Due to his alcohol problem, he can no longer do his job as a surgeon as he used to, and he keeps coming into conflict with his family. Thanks to the love and help of his wife, however, he succeeds in undergoing psychotherapy and processing his war experiences.

The sports teacher Vanessa Price served as a truck driver during the war. In the ambush she is injured by the bomb explosion and her right hand has to be amputated in the hospital. After a difficult time in a rehabilitation clinic, she is happy to be back with her family. The formerly self-confident sports teacher is very insecure due to her war injury and must first learn to deal with her new situation and her hand prosthesis. She breaks up with her boyfriend and rejects other people who want to help her. Only later does she manage to turn to other people and find a new love.

The soldier Tommy Yates, who is injured himself, has to watch as his best friend Jordan Owens is killed in the attack on the truck column. He feels guilty about the death of his friend Jordan. When he returned home, he found that his former boss had already given someone else his job as an arms seller. He therefore initially takes on a job as a ticket seller in a cinema. He cannot sleep at night and drives aimlessly through the city in his car. His father, a car mechanic, wants him to be a cop and calls him a wimp when he learns that he wants to go to a therapy group. But Tommy is not ready to become a police officer and feels a stranger in his own country. He therefore decides to go back to Iraq against his family's wishes, as he is of the opinion that he must help his comrades there.

The soldier Jamal Aiken is friends with Tommy Yates and Jordan Owens. Jamal is traumatized when he accidentally kills an Iraqi woman - probably a civilian - while storming a house. Back home, Jamal has health problems and receives no help from the government. When he is turned away several times by his friend Keisha, who works in a café, he takes his girlfriend and other people hostage in the café. He wants to force Keisha to listen to him. His friend Tommy, whom he has called, wants to help him and tries to persuade him to give him his pistol. The situation ends tragically when Jamal deliberately allows himself to be shot by the police .

The film ends with a quote from Machiavelli : Wars begin where you will, but they do not end where you please. (Eng .: wars start where you want them to, but they don't end where you like).
