Guilty by Suspicion ( Guilty by Suspicion ) is an American film drama of Irwin Winkler from the year 1991 .

action

Director David Merrill is married with a son, but he devotes most of his time to work for which he neglects his family. Merrill returned to Hollywood from Paris in 1951 . There he learns that he is to testify before the Committee on Un-American Activities .

Merrill is asked to name the sympathizers of communism from his circle of friends. He refuses to testify, and his name is blacklisted . The film producers no longer want to work with him. The FBI is tailing him.

When Merrill can no longer find a job even in the advertising industry, he agrees to a statement. He appears before the Committee on Un-American Activities, where he says that he only attended a few communist meetings. He was kicked out because he wanted to argue. Although the chairman of the commission threatens Merrill and his wife, the director refuses to denounce his acquaintances.

Reviews

Joe Brown wrote in the Washington Post on March 15, 1991 that the story was told with " admirable simplicity " and " free of sensationalism ." Robert De Niro exudes a “ warm masculine presence ”; the character he plays wrestles between dignity and temptation.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was “ conventionally staged ”, “ superficial ” and did not convey “ the historical background ” of the events.

Awards

Irwin Winkler took part in the 1991 Cannes International Film Festival for the Palme d' Or. Annette Bening won the 1992 London Critics Circle Film Award . The film won the 1992 Political Film Society Award for Exposé and was nominated for the Political Film Society Award for Human Rights .
