Kennett is a city in Dunklin County in the state of Missouri in the USA with 11,260 inhabitants (2000). The city is the seat of this county.

history

In 1845 the place became the seat of the County of Dunklin under the name Chilletecaux . The name of the city came from an Indian chief of the Lenni Lenape ( Delaware ), that of the county from Governor Daniel Dunklin . Because Chilletecaux was a relatively long and difficult name to pronounce, the town was soon renamed Butler . However, this name led to confusion with Butler County at the post office . In 1851 the place was finally named after the Mayor of St. Louis , Luther Martin Kennett .

The city developed mainly as a trading center and with the production of cotton , soybeans and cattle . In 1900 21,706 people lived here, in 1950 there were 45,329.

Demographics

The 11,260 inhabitants are divided into 4,540 households and 3,069 families. 31.9% of households have children under the age of 18, 19% are married couples living together. 2.4 people live in an average household; an average family consists of 2.93 people. In 2000, 84.44% of the residents were white, 13.27% African American , 0.22% American Indian , 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific islander and 0.36% other. 16.9% of the population are under 18, 8.7% between 18 and 24, 25.3% between 25 and 44, 22.9% between 45 and 64 and 16.2% are over 65. The median age is 37 Years. For every 100 women there are 83.7 men.

The median income is $ 26,088 with families earning $ 34,167 . Men earn an average of $ 29,958 and women just $ 18,770. The per capita income is $ 14,397. 26.1% of the population and 20.5% of families are below the poverty line.
