Paul Newell Hester (born January 8, 1959 in Melbourne , † March 26, 2005 ibid) was an Australian pop musician . He celebrated his greatest successes as the drummer in the bands Split Enz and Crowded House .

From a young age, Hester received intensive support from his mother, herself a jazz drummer. His talent with the drums showed up quickly. After getting through a wide variety of jobs, he decided in the early 1980s to pursue a career as a musician.

In 1980 he co-founded the band Cheks, which changed their name to Deckchairs Overboard in 1982 . When the New Zealand band Split Enz was looking for a new drummer at the end of 1983, Hester took part in a trial session at the suggestion of Rob Hirst , the drummer of the band Midnight Oil , and then became a member of the band.

After Split Enz dissolved in 1984, Hester and Neil Finn decided to form a new band; it was the hour of birth of Crowded House . With this band Hester celebrated international success. The debut single Don't Dream It's Over rose to number 2 on the US Billboard charts. The band's first album reached number 12.

When the pressure of constant touring and the desire to spend more time with his newborn daughter increased, Hester left the band in 1994, with which he gave another big farewell concert in 1996. He was then a frequent guest on Australian television and radio shows and he opened a restaurant in Elwood Beach . After his musical break, he joined the band Largest Living Things , with whom he released some EPs in Australia .

Hester, who suffered from depression for years , hanged himself in a park in Melbourne at the age of 46. He left behind his girlfriend Mardi and two daughters, ages eight and ten.
