Don't Dream It's Over is a 1986 Crowded House song , written by Neil Finn and produced by Mitchell Froom. It appeared on the album Crowded House .
In 1991 Paul Young recorded a cover version in which the fourth of the six stanzas is sung by Mike & the Mechanics singer Paul Carrack .

The song deals with the topics of reality and freedom . Don't Dream It's Over was released worldwide on October 1, 1986, and the song became a number one hit in Canada and New Zealand .
Since its release, the New Wave / College Rock ballad has been featured on many television shows including Beverly Hills, 90210, and Summerland Beach . The song was also used in the Hard Rock episode of Miami Vice , in the episode Carriage with Obstacles by American Dad, and in the film adaptation of The Stand . The music video contains some surreal special effects like floating plates or an unwinding roll of film.
The music video won an award in the Best New Artist in a Video category at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards .
