J. Allen Barber
Joel Allen Barber (born January 17, 1809 in Georgia , Franklin County , Vermont , † June 17, 1881 in Lancaster , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Allen Barber attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Vermont at Burlington . He then worked as a teacher in Prince George's County , Maryland . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1834, he began working in his new profession in Fairfield . In 1837 he moved to Lancaster, Wisconsin Territory , where he also practiced as a lawyer. In the local Grant County he worked for several years in the administration. He was also a district attorney there.
In 1846, Barber was a delegate to the first constituent assembly of the future state of Wisconsin. After that state was established, he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1852, 1853, 1863, and 1864 . In 1864 he was its president. In 1856 and 1857 Barber was a member of the Wisconsin Senate . He was a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In the congressional election of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Amasa Cobb on March 4, 1871 . After a re-election in 1872, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 .
In 1874 Allen Barber declined to run again for the US House of Representatives. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died in Lancaster on June 17, 1881.
