Amasa Cobb
Amasa Cobb (born September 27, 1823 in Crawford County , Illinois , † July 5, 1905 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American officer , lawyer and politician . Between 1863 and 1871 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Amasa Cobb attended the public schools in his home country. In 1842 he moved to the Wisconsin Territory , where he worked in the lead business. During the Mexican-American War he was a soldier in the US Army . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in his new profession at Mineral Point . Between 1850 and 1854 he was a district attorney in Iowa County .
Politically, Cobb was a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . He was a member of the Wisconsin Senate in 1855 and 1856 . At the same time he was from 1855 to 1858 as Adjutant General Head of the National Guard of his state. In 1860 and 1861 Cobb was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly , of which he was president in 1861. During the Civil War , Cobb served as an officer in the Union Army . His regular rank was that of Colonel . In March 1865 he became a brevet - Brigadier promoted.
In the congressional elections of 1862 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded A. Scott Sloan on March 4, 1863 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1871 . These were determined by the events of the civil war and its consequences. During his first legislative term, he was also involved in the military. Between 1865 and 1870 the 13th , 14th and 15th amendments were ratified. Alaska was bought by Russia in 1868 and has been part of the United States ever since. During Cobb's time in the US House of Representatives, there were serious clashes between his party and President Andrew Johnson . The main focus was on reconstruction in the states of the former confederation . The climax of these disputes was an impeachment procedure against the president, which failed in the US Senate because of a single vote.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Cobb moved to Lincoln , Nebraska , where he worked as a lawyer. In 1873 he was elected mayor of that city. Between 1878 and 1892 Cobb was a judge on the Nebraska Supreme Court ; since 1888 he was Chief Justice of the latter. Amasa Cobb died on July 5, 1905 in Los Angeles and was buried in Lincoln.
