David Atwood

David Atwood (born December 15, 1815 in Bedford , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire , †  December 11, 1889 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1870 and 1871 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

David Atwood attended public schools in his home country. In 1832 he moved to Hamilton , New York State , where he completed an apprenticeship as a printer. In the following years he got into the newspaper business. In Hamilton he published a newspaper. In 1845 Atwood moved to Freeport , Illinois . There he worked in agriculture until 1847. He then moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he was the publisher and editor of the State Journal for 22 years. Atwood also served in the Wisconsin National Guard. In 1858 he reached the rank of major general.

Politically, Atwood was a member of the Republican Party . In 1861 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly . For the next four years he worked for the federal government in Wisconsin as an assessor . Atwood was mayor of Madison in 1868 and 1869. After the death of Congressman Benjamin F. Hopkins , he was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election due for the second seat of Wisconsin , where he took up his new mandate on February 23, 1870. Since he was no longer running in the regular congressional elections of 1870 , he was only able to end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1871 .

After retiring from the US House of Representatives, David Atwood returned to the newspaper business. Between 1872 and 1876 he was state commissioner of Wisconsin for the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia . In 1872 and 1876 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions , at which Ulysses S. Grant and later Rutherford B. Hayes were nominated as presidential candidates. He died in Madison on December 11, 1889.
