Gerry Whiting Hazelton (born February 24, 1829 in Chester , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , †  September 29, 1920 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gerry Hazelton was the older brother of George Cochrane Hazelton (1832-1922), who also sat for Wisconsin State between 1877 and 1873 in Congress . He first attended the public schools in his home country and the Pinkerton Academy in Derry . At times he also received private lessons. After finishing school, he taught himself for a while as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1852, he began to work in his new profession in Amsterdam, New York State . In 1856 he moved to Columbus , Wisconsin. There he embarked on a political career as a member of the newly formed Republican Party .

In 1860 Hazelton was elected to the Wisconsin Senate, of which he was temporarily acting president. In the same year he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a presidential candidate. In 1864 he became a District Attorney in Columbia County ; In 1866 he briefly served as the tax director for Wisconsin's Second Financial District. He was soon released from this office by President Andrew Johnson . In the congressional election of 1870 Hazelton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded David Atwood on March 4, 1871 . After a re-election in 1872, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1875.

In 1874 Hazelton declined to run for the US House of Representatives again. Two years later he moved to Milwaukee. Between 1876 and 1885 he served as the federal attorney for the eastern part of the state of Wisconsin. In the meantime he practiced as a lawyer in Milwaukee. In 1912 he was appointed Master of Chancery (office advisor). For many years he was a Court Commissioner for the federal government and Milwaukee County . Gerry Hazelton died in Milwaukee in September 1920 at the age of 91.
