John J. Jenkins
John James Jenkins (born August 24, 1843 in Weymouth , England , † June 8, 1911 in Chippewa Falls , Wisconsin ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1895 and 1909 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Jenkins first attended schools in his English homeland. In 1852 he came to the United States with his parents, where the family settled in Baraboo, Wisconsin. During the Civil War , Jenkins served in a volunteer infantry unit from Wisconsin. Between 1867 and 1870 he was a court usher in Sauk County . In 1870 he moved to Chippewa Falls. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He also became the legal representative of his new hometown. Politically, Jenkins was a member of the Republican Party . In 1872 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly . Between 1872 and 1876 he served as a district judge in Chippewa County . He was then from 1876 to 1880 federal attorney in the Wyoming Territory . He then returned to Chippewa Falls, where he practiced as a lawyer again.
In the congressional election of 1894 , Jenkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Nils P. Haugen on March 4, 1895 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . Since 1903 he represented the then newly created eleventh district of his home state there. Between 1903 and 1909 Jenkins was chairman of the judiciary committee . During his time as Congressman, the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898 .
In the run-up to the elections in 1908, Jenkins was not nominated by his party for another legislative term. In May 1910, he was appointed a judge at the Federal District Court for Puerto Rico by US President William Howard Taft . He held this office as the successor to Bernard Shandon Rodey until his death on June 8, 1911 in Chippewa Falls.
