Philetus Sawyer (born September 22, 1816 in Whiting , Addison County , Vermont , †  March 29, 1900 in Oshkosh , Wisconsin ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Wisconsin in both chambers of Congress .

Philetus Sawyer was an infant when his parents moved him to Crown Point, New York State in 1817 . He lived there until 1847; then he settled in Fond du Lac County , Wisconsin, and worked in the lumber industry.

In his new home, Sawyer began to be politically active. In 1857 and 1861 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly , and from 1863 to 1864 he was Mayor of Oshkosh. In 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he stayed from March 4, 1865 to March 3, 1875. During this time he chaired several committees.

Sawyer did not run for re-election, but returned to Congress as a US Senator in 1881 . There he completed two terms in office; he waived re-election in 1892. In the Senate, among other things, he was chairman of the railway committee . He then turned back to his business before he died in March 1900 in Oshkosh.

The Sawyer County , Wisconsin was named after Philetus Sawyer.
