Luther Hanchett

Luther Hanchett (born October 25, 1825 in Middlebury , Knox County , Ohio , †  November 24, 1862 in Plover , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1862 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Luther Hanchett attended public schools in his homeland. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1846, he began to work in Fremont in his new profession. In 1849, he moved to Portage County , Wisconsin, where he worked in the timber business and mining. He was also a district attorney there for two years .

In Wisconsin, Luther Hanchett embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . Between 1856 and 1860 he was a member of the Wisconsin Senate . In the congressional elections of 1860 he was in the second constituency of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC selected. There he took over from Cadwallader C. Washburn on March 4, 1861 . However, he could not end his legislative term in Congress, which ran until March 3, 1863 , because he died on November 24, 1862. His time in the US House of Representatives was marked by the events of the Civil War . Luther Hanchett was buried in Plover. His mandate fell in a by-election to Walter D. McIndoe .
