Henry Smith (politician, 1838)

Henry Smith (born July 22, 1838 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  September 16, 1916 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . From 1887 to 1889 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Smith and his parents moved to Massillon , Ohio, and then to Milwaukee in 1844. There he attended public schools. He then worked as a machine fitter. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the short-lived Labor Party . Between 1868 and 1872 he was a member of the Milwaukee City Council. In 1878 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly . From 1880 to 1887 he served twice more on Milwaukee City Council. Between 1882 and 1884 he acted as City Comptroller .

In the 1886 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Isaac W. Van Schaick , who was no longer running, on March 4, 1887 . Since he lost to Van Schaick in the elections of 1888 , he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1889 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Smith worked as an architect and builder. In 1898 he was re-elected to Milwaukee City Council. He remained a member of this body until his death on September 16, 1916.
