Sean Patrick Duffy (* 3. October 1971 in Hayward , Wisconsin ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . The lawyer has represented northwestern Wisconsin in the United States House of Representatives since 2011 . He resigned his mandate on September 23, 2019.

Family, education and work

Sean Duffy is the tenth of eleven children and grew up in the heavily forested northwestern part of Wisconsin. Following the tradition of his family, Duffy took part in lumberjack competitions during his apprenticeship . Until his bachelor's degree in 1994, he attended Saint Mary's College in Winona ( Minnesota ). He completed a law degree at William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul and was one of the actors in the sixth season of The Real World , a reality TV format from MTV in 1997 . After graduating from Law School with a Juris Doctor and his admission in 1999, he worked as a lawyer. Between 2002 and 2010, Duffy was a district attorney in Ashland County . He also worked as a commentator for the sports channel ESPN .

The Catholic Duffy has been married to Rachel Campos-Duffy since 1999, with whom he has eight children. His wife also appeared on The Real World in a previous season . They met while participating in the reality TV format Road Rules , an offshoot of The Real World. The family lives in Weston , Wisconsin.

politics

In the 2010 election , Duffy was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh congressional constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded the Democrat Dave Obey, who was no longer running for 42 years, on January 3, 2011 . The constituency covers a large area in the rural northwest of the state . On August 26, 2019, Duffy announced his resignation from his mandate on September 23, 2019 in order to be able to devote more time to his family and his sick unborn child.

During his time in Congress, Duffy, who was seen as the future leader of his party, attracted attention through controversial remarks. He denied a connection between individual acts of violence by White Supremacy supporters and attributed the attack in Tucson , in which Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was seriously injured, to leftist ideology. During Donald Trump's presidency, Duffy defended controversial measures such as the entry ban against people from predominantly Muslim countries ( Executive Order 13769 ).
