Orsamus Cole
Orsamus Cole (born August 23, 1819 in Cazenovia , Madison County , New York , † May 5, 1903 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1849 and 1851 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Orsamus Cole attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1843 at Union College in Schenectady . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1845, he began working in his new profession in Chicago . In the same year he moved his office and his residence to Potosi in the Wisconsin Territory .
In his new home, Cole embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . In 1847 he was a delegate to the constituent assembly of the future state of Wisconsin. In the congressional election of 1848 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Mason Cook Darling on March 4, 1849 . Since he in the elections of 1850 the Democrats Ben C. Eastman defeated, he could only one term in until March 3, 1851 Congress completed.
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Orsamus Cole practiced as a lawyer in Potosi until 1855. He was then an associate judge at the Supreme Court of his state from 1855 to 1880 . Between April 1881 and January 1892 he presided over it as Chief Justice . He died on May 5, 1903 in Milwaukee, where he had again worked as a lawyer.
