Isaac W. Van Schaick

Isaac Whitbeck Van Schaick (born December 7, 1817 in Coxackie , Greene County , New York , †  August 22, 1901 in Catonsville , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1887 and again from 1889 to 1891 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Isaac Van Schaick was an uncle of Aaron Van Schaick Cochrane (1858-1943), who represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1897 and 1901. He attended the public schools in his home country and then worked in the manufacture of adhesives. In 1857 he moved to Chicago , Illinois and in 1861 to Wisconsin. In Milwaukee , he got into the milling business. There he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In 1871 Van Schaick was elected to Milwaukee City Council; from 1873 to 1875 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly . Between 1877 and 1882 he was a member of the Wisconsin Senate . In the congressional elections of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of his state , where he succeeded Peter V. Deuster on March 4, 1885 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1886, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1887 . Two years later he was re-elected to Congress in the fourth district of Wisconsin. There he replaced Henry Smith on March 4, 1889 , who had become his successor two years earlier. Isaac Van Schaick served another term in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1891. In 1890 he did not run again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for the Wisconsin Senate.

In 1894 Van Schaick moved to Catonsville, Maryland. There he spent his old age and there he died on August 22, 1901.
