Michael Griffin (born September 9, 1842 in County Clare , Ireland , †  December 29, 1899 in Eau Claire , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1894 and 1899 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1847, Griffin immigrated to Canada from Ireland with his parents . In 1851 the family moved to Ohio and then to Wisconsin in 1856, where they settled in Newport . Michael Griffin attended public schools in Ohio and Wisconsin. During the Civil War he served as a soldier in a volunteer regiment from Wisconsin in the Union Army . He rose from a simple soldier to a first lieutenant.

After the war, he moved to Kilbourn City , Wisconsin. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1868, he began to work there in his new profession. Between 1871 and 1876 he was also employed by the Bank of Kilbourn . At the same time Griffin began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He served on Columbia County County Council in 1874 and 1875 ; In 1876 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly . In the same year he moved to Eau Claire. There he was a city lawyer from 1878 to 1879. Griffin was a member of the Wisconsin Senate between 1880 and 1881 . He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Association , which he regional chaired in the state of Wisconsin in 1887 and 1888.

After the death of Congressman George B. Shaw , Griffin was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on November 5, 1894, when the by-election was due for the seventh seat of Wisconsin . After he was also elected for the next two legislative periods, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War fell . In 1898, Michael Griffin renounced another candidacy. After retiring from the US House of Representatives, he became chairman of the Wisconsin Tax Committee. He died on December 29, 1899 in Eau Claire.
