Walter D. McIndoe

Walter Duncan McIndoe (born March 30, 1819 in Dunbartonshire , Scotland , †  August 22, 1872 in Wausau , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1867 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1834, Walter McIndoe came to the United States. There he worked first in New York , Charleston and St. Louis before he settled in the Wisconsin Territory in 1845 , where he was active in the wood business. At the same time he began a political career. In 1850, 1854, and 1855 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly and he became a member of the Republican Party, founded in 1854 . In 1857 he tried unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Wisconsin. During the Civil War he was Provost Marshal in the state of Wisconsin.

After the death of Congressman Luther Hanchett , McIndoe was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 26, 1863, when he was due for the second seat of Wisconsin . By March 3, 1863, he ended the legislative term of his predecessor. Since he had been elected to the US House of Representatives in the regular congressional elections of 1862 in the newly created sixth district , he was able to begin another term in Congress on March 4, 1863 . After a re-election in 1864, he remained in the House of Representatives until March 3, 1867. From 1865 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with severance payments from the time of the American Revolution. During McIndoe's tenure, the Civil War ended in 1865. In the same year, the 13th amendment to the constitution was passed, which banned slavery . From 1865 onwards, the work of Congress was also overshadowed by the conflict between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson .

In 1866, Walter McIndoe decided not to run again. In the following years he worked in the wood business again. He died on August 22, 1872 in Wausau.
