Burr W. Jones

Burr W. Jones (born March 9, 1846 in Evansville , Wisconsin , †  January 7, 1935 in Madison , Wisconsin) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Burr Jones attended public schools in his home country and then taught himself for several years. He then studied literature at the University of Wisconsin until 1870 . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1871, he began to work in Portage in his new profession. In 1872 he moved his residence and law firm to Madison. In 1872 and 1874 he was District Attorney in Dane County there .

Politically, Jones was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded George Cochrane Hazelton on March 4, 1883 . Since he was defeated by Republican Robert M. La Follette in the elections of 1884 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1885 .

Between 1885 and 1915, Burr Jones taught law at the University of Wisconsin. In 1892 he was chairman of the Wisconsin regional Democratic Party Congress and in 1896 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . In 1897 and 1898, Jones was a member and chairman of the Wisconsin State Tax Commission. From 1920 to 1926 he served as a judge on the Supreme Court of his state. Then he worked again as a lawyer. Burr Jones died in Madison on January 7, 1935.
