Nils P. Haugen
Nils Pederson Haugen (born March 9, 1849 in Modum , Norway , † April 23, 1931 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1895 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Nils Haugen came to the United States with his parents in 1854, where the family settled in Pierce County . He attended the public schools of his new home and the Luther College in Decorah ( Iowa ). After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission to the bar in 1874, he began to work in River Falls in his new profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1879 and 1880 ; between 1882 and 1887 he was railroad commissioner for the state government of Wisconsin.
In the congressional elections of 1886 Haugen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Hugh H. Price on March 4, 1887 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . Since 1893 he represented the newly created tenth district of Wisconsin there. In 1894, Haugen declined to run again.
In 1894, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Wisconsin, which instead went to William H. Upham . Between 1901 and 1921, Haugen was a member of the Wisconsin Tax Commission. In 1919 and 1920 he was President of the National Tax Association . From 1921 to 1923 he was an advisor to the Board of Equalization of the State of Montana . He then moved to Madison, where he spent his twilight years with literary activities. Nils Haugen died there on April 23, 1931.
