Jay Withington Johnson (born September 30, 1943 in Bessemer , Michigan , †  October 17, 2009 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1997 and 1999 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jay Johnson attended Gogebic Community College until 1963 and then studied at Northern Michigan University in Marquette until 1965 . Between 1966 and 1968 he served in the US Army . He then studied at Michigan State University in East Lansing until 1970 . Between 1964 and 1996, Johnson was a television and radio journalist in Florida , Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana . He became president of the Family Violence Center in Green Bay ; He was also a board member of the Easter Seals of Wisconsin , an organization that works to improve the lives of the disabled. He also served as the vice president of the United Way charity in Brown County . He was also a board member of this institution at the state level.

Politically, Johnson was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1996 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Wisconsin, where he succeeded Toby Roth on January 3, 1997 . Because he was defeated by Republican Mark Andrew Green in the 1998 elections, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1999 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Johnson was director of the United States Mint in 2000 and 2001, succeeding Philip N. Diehl . He then worked on a private basis as a coin dealer and numismatist for the Franklin Mint . In June 2009 he became the spokesman for Goldline International . On October 17th of the same year, he died of a heart attack.
