Samuel Moore (politician, 1774)

Samuel Moore (born February 8, 1774 in Deerfield , Cumberland County , Province of New Jersey , †  February 18, 1861 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1818 and 1822 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Moore received a classical education and then studied until 1791 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. From 1792 to 1794 he worked there himself as a lecturer. After a subsequent medical degree and his admission as a doctor, he began to practice in Dublin (Pennsylvania) and later in Greenwich (New Jersey) in this profession. After that he worked in the East India trade for a few years. In 1808 he settled in Bucks County , Pennsylvania, where he ran some grain and oil mills. Later he also ran a sawmill and a wool factory. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party .

After the resignation of MP Samuel D. Ingham , Moore was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on October 13, 1818. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on May 20, 1822 . From 1821 he was chairman of the Indian committee.

Between 1824 and 1835, Samuel Moore was director of the United States Mint . He moved to Philadelphia and became involved in coal mining and coal marketing. He also became President of Hazleton Coal Co. He held this post until his death on February 18, 1861 in Philadelphia.
