George Nicholas Eckert

George Nicholas Eckert (born July 4, 1802 in Womelsdorf , Pennsylvania , †  June 28, 1865 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor in 1824, George Eckert began to work in Reading in this profession. In 1824 he was among the founders of the Medical Society in Berks County . He later moved to Pine Grove, where he worked in the coal and iron trade. Politically, he joined the Whig Party .

In the congressional elections of 1846 Eckert was elected in the 14th  constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Alexander Ramsey on March 4, 1847 . Until March 3, 1849, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was initially shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War .

George Eckert ran the Philadelphia Mint between 1851 and 1853 . After the dissolution of the Whigs in the mid-1850s, he joined the newly formed Republican Party . He died on June 28, 1865 in Philadelphia, where he was also buried.
