Alexander Ramsey (born September 8, 1815 near Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , † April 22, 1903 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) was an American politician .

biography

Ramsey was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1843 as a member of the Whig Party in Pennsylvania , where he remained until 1847. He was then the first governor of the Minnesota Territory from 1849 to 1853 . Two years later he became mayor of St. Paul. In 1860, Ramsey became the second governor of the newly created state of Minnesota. He held this office until 1863 and resigned it when he was elected for the Republicans in the US Senate . After being re-elected, Ramsey remained a Senator until 1875. US President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him Secretary of War of the United States in 1879 ; he remained in his cabinet until the end of Hayes' term on March 4, 1881 .

From 1882 to 1886, Ramsey served as chairman of the Edmunds Commission , which dealt with the problem of polygamy among Mormons in the Utah Territory . In 1887 he was a delegate of his state at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the US Constitution . He served as president of the Minnesota Historical Society from 1891 until his death in 1903 .

Ramsey was the son-in-law of Congressman Michael Hutchinson Jenks (1785-1867) from Pennsylvania.

Appreciation

After Ramsey were the Ramsey County and the Alexander Ramsey Park in Redwood Falls , Minnesota's largest city park which is named.
