Guy Victor Howard (* 28. November 1879 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ; † 20th August 1954 ) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

Life

Early life

After attending compulsory school, Howard first graduated from the Minneapolis School of Business and finally Georgetown University , where he received his degree in business administration . In 1897 he got his first job in the mail distribution office of the US House of Representatives , a position he held until 1901. When he had enough money saved, he started an insurance company in his hometown of Minneapolis in 1901. In 1912, Howard found a job at the Hennepin County Motor Vehicle Registration Office , where he worked until 1934.

Political career

In 1916 Howard was one of the electors whose job it was to elect the US president in Electoral College . As a Republican, he voted for Charles Evans Hughes , who was victorious in Minnesota , but who had lost to Woodrow Wilson nationwide .

In 1936, after the death of Thomas David Schall, he stood in the by-election for his seat in the United States Senate and prevailed with 42.9 percent of the vote against the independent candidate N. J. Holmberg. Since he did not run for the next legislative term in the simultaneous election, Howard stayed in the Senate for only 60 days, from November 4, 1936 to January 3, 1937. Then Ernest Lundeen, who won the regular election, replaced him from the Farmer Labor Party .

After his brief stint in Washington, DC , Howard retired into private life. He died in 1954, at the age of 74.
