Wendell Richard "Wendy" Anderson (born February 1, 1933 in Saint Paul , Minnesota , † July 17, 2016 ibid) was an American politician of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party . From 1971 to 1976 he was the 33rd Governor of Minnesota and then until 1978 served as a Senator in the US Congress.

life and career

After graduating from high school, Anderson began studying law. He was also a member of the US national ice hockey team for several years and won the silver medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . In 1958 he was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives for the DFL . He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1960. In 1962 and 1964 he was elected to the Minnesota Senate. In 1970 Anderson won the gubernatorial elections and became the 33rd governor of the US state on January 4, 1971. In 1972 he was confirmed in office. Additionally, Anderson was selected by the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the World Hockey Association's inaugural draft. However, he decided against a career in ice hockey and continued to serve as governor.

After Walter Mondale was elected Vice President of the United States , Anderson took over his seat in the US Senate on December 30, 1976. Two years later he lost it in the congressional elections to the Republican Rudy Boschwitz .

Anderson was married; he leaves three children.
