Cushman Kellogg Davis
Cushman Kellogg Davis (born June 16, 1838 in Henderson , Jefferson County , New York , † November 27, 1900 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) was an American politician . He belonged to the Republican Party . From 1874 to 1876 he was governor of the state of Minnesota.
Davis was born in Henderson, New York in 1838. Before he was a year old, his family moved him to the Wisconsin Territory . There he attended Carroll College in Waukesha . Davis later studied at the University of Michigan , where he finally graduated in 1857 . Admitted to the bar in 1860, he joined the Union Army during the Civil War , where he served in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry as a lieutenant in charge of Company B, a volunteer regiment.
He had lived in Saint Paul since 1865 and was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1867 . From 1868 to 1873 he worked as a public prosecutor. He was then elected the seventh governor of the state of Minnesota and held this office from January 7, 1874 to January 7, 1876. Davis was a member of the US Senate from March 4, 1887 until his death in November 1900 . In his role as senator, he took part in the peace negotiations to end the Spanish-American War .
