Dean Malcolm Barkley (born August 31, 1950 in Annandale , Minnesota ) is an American politician with the Independence Party . Barkley was after the death of the mandate holder Paul Wellstone from November 2002 to January 2003 temporarily US Senator for the state of Minnesota.

Barkley grew up in Annandale, where he graduated from high school in 1968 , studied at the University of Minnesota , where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1972 and his Juris Doctor in 1976 . He became a lawyer and was President of Dayton's Furniture in Annandale from 1988 to 1991 .

Politically, Barkley founded the regional branch of the Ross Perots Reform Party in his state and was its chairman. For the Reform Party, which later became the Independence Party, he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1992 and in 1994 and 1996 for a seat in the United States Senate . Although he won no mandate in each case, he made his party known and achieved that it received public campaign funding. In 1998, Barkley advised the successful gubernatorial campaign of his fellow party member Jesse Ventura and was appointed by him in January 1999 as the head of the planning authority of the state. After the death of the Democratic US Senator Paul Wellstone a few days before the 2002 Senate election , Barkley was named an interim member of the Senate on November 4, 2002 by Gov. Jesse Ventura, a party friend whose successful gubernatorial campaign he led in 1998, for the vacant seat of Occupy Wellstone. Barkley was a Senator from November 5, 2002 until Wellstone's regular term ended on January 3, 2003.

Barkley ran again in the 2008 Senate election against Republican mandate holder Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken . Barkley received 15.15 percent of the vote, behind Coleman with 41.98 and Franken with 41.99 percent.

Dean Barkley practices with a Minneapolis law firm . He served as the leader of the Minnesota Compact , a clean campaign initiative, and on the state governing body of Common Cause . He has been married to Susan Barkley since 1982; the couple has three children.
