  • On November 5, 2002 , the United States was elected to the Senate . The election was part of the 2002 mid-term elections , in which the House of Representatives was re-elected .

    Each of the 50 states has 2 representatives in the Senate. Before the election, 49 senators were Republicans, 50 Democrats, and one independent. A new senator was elected in each of 34 states in 2002; the tenure of the remaining 66 senators ended in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Of the seats available for election, 14 have been held by Democrats and 19 by Republicans. The Republicans won two more seats at the expense of the Democrats.
