Election to the United States Senate in 1968
The 1968 election to the United States Senate for the 91st United States Congress took place on November 5th. It was part of the election in the United States that day and coincided with the presidential election in which Richard Nixon was first elected president.
The 34 Class III seats were up for election, there were no by-elections for senators who left office prematurely. 23 of these senators belonged to the Democratic Party and 11 to the Republicans . 20 Senators were re-elected, 13 Democrats and 7 Republicans. 7 previously Democratic seats went to the Republicans, the Democrats won 2 seats from the Republicans. With that, the Republicans won 5 seats, and they got another one in December when, after the death of Democratic Senator Bob Bartlett, Republican Ted Stevens was appointed as his successor by Alaska's Governor Walter Hickel . The Democratic majority fell from 62 to 56 seats, while the Republicans were able to improve from 38 to 44.
