Edward Gurney

Edward John Gurney

Edward John Gurney (born January 12, 1914 in Portland , Maine , † May 14, 1996 in Winter Park , Florida ) was an American politician .

Gurney attended Colby College in Waterville and studied after graduating in 1935 at the Law School of Harvard University on. He finished his studies in 1938 and was accepted into the New York Bar. Gurney practiced in New York City until 1941 . That year he joined the United States Army as a result of World War II . In 1946 he retired from active service and studied again at Duke University Law School . After graduating there, Gurney moved to Winter Park, Florida in 1948 and began practicing again. 1961 to 1962 he was mayor of the city.

Gurney was elected as a Republican in Congress in 1962 and represented the State of Florida in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1963 to January 3, 1969 . He then moved to the US Senate , where he represented Florida as a senator from January 3, 1969 until his resignation on December 31, 1974. After retiring from politics, Gurney returned to Winter Park, where he died in 1996.
