Katherine Anne "Kathy" Castor (born August 20, 1966 in Miami , Florida ) is an American politician . Since 2007 she has represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Kathy Castor was born in Miami to Betty Castor . Her mother was a state senator in Florida and narrowly lost to Mel Martínez in the 2004 US Senate election . She grew up in Tampa ; until 1988 she studied political science at Emory University in Atlanta ( Georgia ). After studying law at Florida State University in Tallahassee and being admitted to the bar in 1991, she began working in her new profession. In this capacity, she also worked for the Florida State Department of Local Affairs. She was temporarily president of the Florida Bar Association.

Politically, Castor joined the Democratic Party . In 2000 she ran unsuccessfully for the Florida Senate. Between 2002 and 2006 she was a member of the Hillsborough County County Council . In the 2006 congressional election , she was elected to the eleventh constituency of Florida in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she succeeded Jim Davis on January 3, 2007 . After five re-elections so far, she can still exercise her mandate in Congress today. Since she won again in the 2016 elections, she is expected to remain in Congress until at least January 3, 2019; since January 2013 she has represented the 14th district of her state there. Castor is or was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and two of its sub-committees as well as the Budget Committee .

Kathy Castor is married and has two daughters.
