Dante Bruno Fascell (born March 9, 1917 in Bridgehampton , Suffolk County , New York , † November 28, 1998 in Clearwater , Florida ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dante Fascell was born on Long Island in 1917 ; his family then moved to Florida in 1925. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1938 , where he was inducted into the prestigious Iron Arrow Honor Society . During his time at that university, Fascell was a member of the Kappa Sigma brotherhood . When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Florida National Guard . He took part in the Africa , Sicily and Italy campaigns and retired from the army on January 20, 1946 with the rank of captain. From 1947 to 1950 he served as the legal advisor to Dade County MPs in the Florida Legislature . From 1950 to 1954, Fascell was an elected member of the Florida House of Representatives .

He was then elected as a Democrat in the 84th and 18 subsequent Congresses. His term of office extended from January 3, 1955 to January 3, 1993. During this time he refused to participate in the Southern Manifesto in 1956 , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Furthermore, Fascell was initially a supporter of the Vietnam War , but he soon spoke out against the war. He supported the War Powers Act of 1973 and gained support for the Cuban Americans who had chosen his area. From 1984 to 1993, Fascell was Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs . In 1969 he was elected by the President to represent the United States at the 24th UN General Assembly .

Dante Fascell lived secluded on his estate after the end of his 19th term in 1993. Thirty days before his death, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton . He suffered from colorectal cancer and died on November 28, 1998 at the age of 81.
