Virginia "Ginny" Brown-Waite (born October 5, 1943 in Albany , New York ) is an American politician . Between 2003 and 2011 she represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ginny Brown-Waite attended the State University of New York in Albany until 1976 . She then studied at Russell Sage College in Troy until 1984 , where she obtained a master's degree. She then worked in the administration of the New York Senate . In the 1980s she moved to Hernando County in Florida, where she was a County Commissioner for a tenure between 1990 and 1992 . Politically, Brown-Waite joined the Republican Party . From 1992 to 2002 she was a member of the Florida Senate , of which she was president in 2000. There she campaigned for the death penalty .

In the 2002 congressional elections , she was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Florida , where she succeeded Karen Thurman on January 3, 2003 . After three re-elections, she was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2011 . There she was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means . It also served on two sub-committees. She was in favor of a ban on online gambling and refused to control private gun ownership .

In 2010, Ginny Brown-Waite declined to run again for health reasons. She was married to the late Harvey Waite.
