Thomas J. "Tom" Rooney (born November 21, 1970 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . From 2009 to 2019 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom Rooney grew up in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and attended Benjamin School in North Palm Beach . He then studied at Syracuse University in Syracuse ( New York ) until 1989 and then at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington (Pennsylvania) until 1993 . In the meantime he worked on the staff of US Senator Connie Mack . Rooney continued his studies at the University of Florida at Gainesville until 1996 . After studying law at the University of Miami and being admitted to the bar in 1999, he began working in his new profession. Between 2000 and 2004 he was a military lawyer in the US Army . During this time he also gave legal lectures at the US Military Academy at West Point . He then worked for the Florida state government as assistant attorney general .

Politically, Rooney joined the Republican Party . In the 2008 congressional election he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Florida , where he succeeded the previously defeated Democrat Tim Mahoney on January 3, 2009 . In 2010 he was re-elected for two years.

After a reorganization of the constituencies in Florida, he has represented the 17th constituency in Congress since 2013. He was confirmed in office in 2012, 2014 and 2016. In Parliament he was a member of the Agriculture Committee , the Armed Forces Committee, and the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, as well as several subcommittees. In February 2018, he announced that he would not run for the House of Representatives again. He was a member of parliament until the end of the legislative period on January 3, 2019.
