John H. Smithwick

John Harris Smithwick (born July 17, 1872 in Orange , Cherokee County , Georgia , †  December 2, 1948 in Moultrie , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1927 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Smithwick attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1895 the Reinhardt Normal College in Waleska . After a subsequent law degree at Cumberland University in Lebanon ( Tennessee ) and his admission as a lawyer in 1898, he began to work in Moultrie in his new profession. In 1906 he moved his residence and law firm to Pensacola , Florida.

Politically, Smithwick was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1918 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Florida , where he succeeded Walter Kehoe on March 4, 1919 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1927 . During this time, the 18th and 19th amendments to the constitution were passed there.

In 1926, John Smithwick was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. As a result, he worked in Fort Myers and in the federal capital Washington in the real estate industry until 1932 ; then he retired. John Smithwick died in Moultrie on December 2, 1948.
