Debbie Jessika Mucarsel-Powell (* 18th January 1971 as Debbie Jessika Mucarsel in Guayaquil , Ecuador ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Since January 3, 2019 she is a Member of the State of Florida in the United States House of Representatives .

Life

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell grew up in Ecuador and came to the United States with her mother and three sisters when she was fourteen. The family settled in Pomona , California . To support her family financially, she worked in a donut shop during her youth. In 1995 her father died of a violent crime in Ecuador, which is why Mucarsel-Powell is politically committed to tightening American gun rights. After graduating from high school, Mucarsel-Powell studied political science at Pitzer College , where she obtained her bachelor's degree. Mucarsel-Powell later earned her Masters degree from Claremont Graduate University . From 2003 to 2007 Mucarsel-Powell worked at Florida International University . She then worked at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine until 2011 . Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is married with two children.

In 2016, Mucarsel-Powell applied for a seat in the Florida Senate without success . In August 2017, she announced that she would run against Republican incumbent Carlos Curbelo for the seat of the 26th Congressional electoral district in the United States House of Representatives in the following year’s congressional election . In the Democratic primary , Mucarsel-Powell prevailed against Demetries Grimes. The election on November 6, 2018, she just won against Curbelo with 50.9 percent of the vote. On January 3, 2019, Mucarsel-Powell officially replaced Curbelo. She is the first member of Congress to be born in Ecuador. As a member of the Congress, Mucarsel-Powell represents southern Florida, which includes the city of Miami .
