Pomona is a city (type: city ) in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , United States , with 149,058 inhabitants (as of 2010).
history
The city bears the name of the Roman fruit goddess Pomona , which is due to the region's special role in the cultivation of citrus fruits and wine in the settlement long before the formal founding of an independent city in 1888. The settlement emerged from a land grant from the Spanish colonial administration in 1837 after the valley had been used by a Spanish rancher since the 18th century.
In the early 19th century, the valley and settlement became the center of citrus growing for Southern California, just as Oroville and the mother orange tree became the center for Northern California. With the railroad in the 1870s, fruit growing took a further boom and viticulture was added. The industry already used the name Pomona for fruits from the region, so the name was also used for the settlement when it was registered as an independent regional body in 1888 . It has had the formal status of a city since 1911.
With the rise of Los Angeles since the 1930s and increasingly after the Second World War, Pomona became urbanized and the formerly agricultural areas were built on with large-scale settlements. Today it is one of the largest suburbs with around 150,000 inhabitants.
