James Tarjan

James Edward Tarjan (born February 22, 1952 in Pomona , California ) is an American chess player .

Life

In June 1966, he won the California Youth Championship. In 1967 he came first at the California Open , and in 1968 he won the Pacific Southwest Open in Santa Monica and the El Segundo Open . At the youth championships in the USA, Tarjan came in 7th in 1967, and in 1968 on 3rd – 4th place. Place and 1969 on the shared 2nd – 3rd place Space. In 1973 he won the American Open . In 1974 he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE , and then in 1976 the title of Grand Master . In the 1979 Riga Interzonal Tournament , he finished 11th. In 1984 he ended his chess career, after a break of 30 years he returned to tournaments in 2014. In July he took part in the (non-rated) 2014 US Open Championship in Orlando (Florida) , in October he played at the PokerStars Isle of Man International Chess Tournament in Douglas (Isle of Man) . In 2017 he was at the tournament on the Isle of Man and won a highly regarded game against ex-world champion Wladimir Kramnik , who was number 2 in the world rankings at the time.

He works as a librarian at the Santa Cruz Public Library .

Tarjan's Elo rating is 2411 (as of June 2017), his highest rating of 2540 he reached in July 1981.

National team

Tarjan participated with the United States in the 1974 , 1976 , 1978 , 1980 and 1982 Chess Olympiads . He won with the team in 1976 and reached third place in 1974, 1978 and 1982, in the individual ranking he won 1974 on the second reserve board and 1978 on the first reserve board and in 1982 he reached third place on the first reserve board. A total of four times Tarjan took part with the USA in student team championships and won the competition in 1970.
