Leinier Domínguez Pérez (born September 23, 1983 in Havana ) is a Cuban / American chess grandmaster of the expanded world class, who has been eligible to play for the United States since December 2018.

Career

Domínguez, who already had numerous successes in national and international youth tournaments as a talented youth, was third in the 1999 Cuban (senior) championship. That same year he finished second in Santa Clara and posted his first norm for the grandmaster title.

In 2000 he was second in the national championship and won the zone tournament of FIDE in Valencia . In the same year he made his debut in the national team at the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul (+5 = 3 −2) and became a grandmaster. In 2002 he won the Cuban Championship for the first time and won together with Lázaro Bruzón in Esbjerg . In 2003 he won the zone tournament in Guayaquil and qualified for the 2004 FIDE World Cup in Tripoli . This is where he took the spotlight when he made it to the quarterfinals. He was eliminated against Teymur Rəcəbov only after a tough fight by a draw in the last blitz game, which he should have won with White according to the regulations. In the previous rounds he prevailed against top players like Vladislav Tkachiev and Alexei Drejew .

Shortly before this world championship, he won the prestigious Capablanca Memorial in Havana . At the Chess Olympiad in Calvià in the same year he played on the first board for Cuba and achieved a very good result (+5 = 5 −1). At the Cuban Championship in 2005, which was held according to the knockout system , he lost in the final against Lázaro Bruzón and was runner-up. A year later he took revenge and beat Bruzón in the final with 4.5-3.5, which he won the title for the second time after 2002. In October 2006 he won a tournament in Barcelona with 8 points from nine games, ahead of Vasyl Ivanchuk . In May 2008 he won the 43rd Capablanca Memorial in Havana, and in November in Almaty the world championship in blitz chess .

In 2013 he won the fourth tournament of the FIDE Grand Prix 2012–2013 held in Thessaloniki with 8 points from eleven games (+6 = 4 −1). In 2019 Domínguez won the Dortmund Chess Days with 4½ points from seven games.

Domínguez qualified five times for the World Chess Cup ( 2007 , 2009 , 2011 , 2013 and 2015 ). He was most successful in 2011 when he reached the round of 16, but failed there to Judit Polgár .

National team

Domínguez took from 2000 to 2016 at all Chess Olympiads, where he at Chess Olympiad in 2016 reached the singles competition in second place on top board. In addition, Domínguez took part in the team world championships in 2001, 2005 and 2015 and at the same time achieved third place on the top board in the individual ranking in 2015. He also won the Pan-American Team Championships in 2000 and 2003 with the Cuban team and came in second in 2009 and 2013; In the individual ranking he won 2000 on the reserve board and 2013 on the top board.

Domínguez has been playing in the Russian team championship since 2012 for the Saint Petersburg Chess Federation, with which he became the Russian team champion in 2013 and 2016. He also took part in the European Club Cups from 2012 to 2016 with the team, taking second place with the team in 2012 and 2016, third place in 2015, and third place on the second board in the 2015 individual ranking.

In the Spanish team championship , Domínguez played for champions CA Tiendas UPI Mancha Real in 2002 , in 2008 for SCC Sabadell and from 2011 to 2013 and again since 2015 for Sestao XT , with whom he became champions in 2012 , 2013 and 2016 .
