Teymur Rəcəbov (born March 12, 1987 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR ) is a world-class Azerbaijani chess player . He achieved his greatest success by winning the 2019 World Chess Cup .

Spelling of the name and origin of the name

The Azerbaijani alphabet is based on the Latin one, so the correct spelling is Rəcəbov . The alternative Azerbaijani spelling of his name is Teymur Räcäbov . The name is pronounced something like Rädschäbow . The English-French mixed transcription Teimour Radjabov (from Russian Теймур Раджабов) has established itself internationally and is used in most languages ​​- also by the world chess federation FIDE , in chess databases and mostly also in the German press. Sometimes Teimur Radschabow is written in the German-speaking area . Like Garry Kasparov , Teimour Rəcəbov uses the maiden name of his mother Leyla Rəcəbova. His father Boris Şeynin is of Jewish descent.

Life and Achievements

Teymur Rəcəbov learned to play chess at the age of four. The great talent of Rəcəbov, known as a “ child prodigy ”, came into its own very quickly. His first appearance in Germany showed him as the winner of the U9 tournament at the International Youth Festival in Dresden in July 1994 with 13 wins in 13 games. At the age of eleven, he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE . At the age of twelve he was the youngest participant to win the title of European Youth Champion U18. Another year later Rəcəbov became a grandmaster , at the time the second youngest in the history of chess. His early fame in the chess scene allowed him to be invited to world-class tournaments at a very young age : since 2001, he has been taking part in top-class tournaments at irregular intervals . Rəcəbov was able to win a total of seven medals at youth world and youth European championships, including becoming youth world champion in the U12 age group in Oropesa del Mar in 1998 and four times European youth champion (1996 and 1997 in the age group U10, 1998 in the age group U12 and 1999 in the age group U18) ).

The year 2003 was very successful for him in terms of sport. At the tournament in Linares he defeated Garri Kasparow with the black pieces, in Dortmund he defeated Viswanathan Anand in a much discussed brilliant game, also with black . At the FIDE knockout world championships 2004 in Tripoli Rəcəbov was third, he was only eliminated in the semifinals against the Englishman Michael Adams . In 2005 Rəcəbov continued his success: He won a very strong tournament in Dos Hermanas, Spain and came second behind Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu at the European Championships in Warsaw .

In 2006 he finished second at the tournament in Linares together with FIDE world champion Wesselin Topalow behind the tournament winner Levon Aronjan . At the Mainz Chess Days he lost the rapid chess match for the unofficial Rapid World Championship against Anand 3: 5. In October he won a strong rapid chess tournament in Cap d'Agde , in which he prevailed in the final with 1.5: 0.5 against Sergei Karjakin .

In 2007 Rəcəbov was able to win together with Levon Aronjan and Wesselin Topalow the strong Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee , which is regarded as one of the most important of the chess year alongside the tournaments in Linares / Morelia , Dortmund and Sofia . He was particularly noticeable through black victories with new ideas in the King's Indian defense .

In 2010 he was able to his second place in the FIDE Grand Prix for the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2012 qualifying. There he was eliminated in the first round against Wladimir Kramnik .

He also took part in the candidates' tournament in London for the 2013 World Chess Championship , where he failed with 8th place.

In 2015 he won the bronze medal at the rapid chess world championship in Berlin behind defending champion Magnus Carlsen and the Russian Jan Nepomnjaschtschi .

Rəcəbov has been playing on the first or second board of the Azerbaijani national team since 2001 and participated in the chess Olympiads in 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 , 2010 , 2012 and 2014 , the team world championships in 2010 and 2011 and the team European championships in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
